The Chisholm Dynasty began in the 18th century in South Carolina.
James (Jimmy Chisholm) was the 8th of 10 children born on December 3, 1866 to
James and Adleine Moore Chisholm. Born in Fairfield, he was born three years
and two days after the Emancipation Proclamation. Jimmy, as he was called, was
a carpenter and farmer living in the Blackstock area of Fairfield County. He
married Adleine Moore, daughter of Alfred Phillip Moore and Mary Brown Moore
also of Fairfield County. Alfred Phillip was preacher and a state legislator, who
served in South Carolina’s State House of Representatives. Together they had
ten children: David (Gus), William (Will), Mattie, James (Man), Mamie, Mary,
Michael (Mike), Leslie (Les), Ada, and Ella. Five of James and Adleine’s children
were born into slavery and five were born free. James and Adleine attended
Upper Hope Station where he served as a deacon. Both are buried at that church
on Ashford Ferry Road in Fairfield County.
William, called Will, was a carpenter and building contractor. Will operated
his own building contracting business and provided employment for many
people in the Chester area. His brothers David, Leslie, and Mike worked for
him and learned the carpentry trade. While there is no evidence of formal
training in carpentry, it is thought that this trade was learned from for
enslaved owner, who came to America as carpenters. He was married to
Pearl Chapman. Their children were Marie, Pearl, Atlea, James, Will Jr.
Pauline, Ada, Annie Mae, Ella Nathaniel, Alphonso, Teresa, Elliot, LD,
