About the Chisholms

Who are the Chisholms?

The Chisholm Dynasty began in the 18th century in South Carolina.

James (Jimmy Chisholm) was the 8th of 10 children born on December 3, 1866 to

James and Adleine Moore Chisholm. Born in Fairfield, he was born three years

and two days after the Emancipation Proclamation. Jimmy, as he was called, was

a carpenter and farmer living in the Blackstock area of Fairfield County. He

married Adleine Moore, daughter of Alfred Phillip Moore and Mary Brown Moore

also of Fairfield County. Alfred Phillip was preacher and a state legislator, who

served in South Carolina’s State House of Representatives. Together they had

ten children: David (Gus), William (Will), Mattie, James (Man), Mamie, Mary,

Michael (Mike), Leslie (Les), Ada, and Ella. Five of James and Adleine’s children

were born into slavery and five were born free. James and Adleine attended

Upper Hope Station where he served as a deacon. Both are buried at that church

on Ashford Ferry Road in Fairfield County.

William, called Will, was a carpenter and building contractor. Will operated

his own building contracting business and provided employment for many

people in the Chester area. His brothers David, Leslie, and Mike worked for

him and learned the carpentry trade. While there is no evidence of formal

training in carpentry, it is thought that this trade was learned from for

enslaved owner, who came to America as carpenters. He was married to

Pearl Chapman. Their children were Marie, Pearl, Atlea, James, Will Jr.

Pauline, Ada, Annie Mae, Ella Nathaniel, Alphonso, Teresa, Elliot, LD,

Mildred, and JC. Will and Pearl are buried at Mr. Hopewell Baptist Church

in Chester, SC.

David, whose nickname was Gus, was a farmer and a carpenter. He was

born May 12, 1890 in Fairfield County, SC. His first wife was Hattie

Williams, and they had 8 children: David, Ida Mae, Lucille, Ada, John, Haze,

Sam and Elizabeth. His second wife was Rebecca Feaster. No children were

born to this union. David and his family were members of Upper Hope

Station Baptist Church. David died on November 20, 1961. He and his first

wife, Hattie, are buried there.

Spouse(s): Hattie Grier Chisholm (April 18, 1896 – September 25, 1946)

Children of King David (Gus) Chisholm:

David (1913-March 6,1946) married to Hattie Grier 1 st and Rebecca Feaster

Today, there are thousands of descendants of JameS and Adeliane spread across the country. We are lawyers, builders, accountants, educators, business owners, healthcare workers, executives, ministers, and so much more. Chisholms are a people of value, ingenuity, and audacity. Our legacy is rich and we plan to celebrate our accomplishments and heritage while building on the foundations that our ancestors instilled within us; hope, faith, love, service, endowment, and family.
